Community Engagement

100% Participation in Community Engagement & Adopt-a-School

In 2021, we set a goal that by the end of 2025, 100% of our renewable energy sites that are more than 50 MW in size would have community engagement plans and participate in our Adopt-a-School program. We’re pleased to report that we reached this goal a year ahead of schedule, with all 33 sites participating as of the end of 2024!

These programs are an important part of our success both during development and operations. In 2024, approximately $188,000 was donated through the Adopt-A-School program as a result.

Expanding the Availability of Emergency Medical Services in Grant County, WV

Grant County Ambulance provides emergency medical services to Grant County, West Virginia, where we own and operate our Black Rock and Mount Storm wind farms. During discussions with local landowners about repowering the Mount Storm wind project, we learned of the need for a 24/7 ambulance service in the project area to ensure residents could receive timely life-saving medical services. Clearway collaborated with the Grant County Board of Commissioners and Grant County Ambulance to acquire land we then donated to the County for construction of a new ambulance building. Securing the land enabled the County to take advantage of federal funds to construct the new facility, helping to meet a critical need for local residents and businesses.

Energizing Communities

In August, we made our first round of donations through the newly established Dan’s Mountain Wind Community Benefit Fund, which will contribute $10,000 per year to the local community throughout the life of the project. Funds will be allocated based on guidance from local stakeholders who best know the needs of the Western Maryland community. In 2024, the initial donations consisted of $1,000 each to Allegany College of Maryland’s Western Maryland Works facility and the Robotics and Engineering for Allegany County Together (REACT) Club, as well as $400 to the Western Maryland Health System Foundation Dialysis Patient Assistance Fund.

Dan’s Mountain Wind will achieve commercial operation in 2025.

Educating the Environmental Stewards of Tomorrow

In July, our California Valley Solar Ranch (CVSR) project hosted a summer program run by the Allensworth Progressive Association. The Tulare Lake Project-based Learning Program brought twenty 7th, 8th, and 9th graders to the site to learn about multi-benefit land repurposing with a focus on agrivoltaics. Guided by a CVSR facility manager and staff wildlife biologists from Sequoia Riverlands Trust, the students toured the site to look at wildlife habitat for San Joaquin Valley Kit Fox and Giant Kangaroo Rats, both under the solar arrays as well as in conserved lands nearby. They discussed how sheep grazing was incorporated to maintain quality habitat for endangered species as well as for vegetation control and fire prevention.

Building Community Infrastructure

In April, we were pleased to announce that the Victory Pass and Arica solar and storage projects in Riverside County, California, had been placed in service. In October, several students from the nearby Eagle Mountain Elementary School joined us at the projects’ ribbon cutting, and the sites donated $35,000 through Clearway’s Adopt-a-School program to build a new playground and help start a 4H program, including funds for a chicken coop and other supplies. Congressman Raul Ruiz (CA-25) joined us for the ribbon cutting.

Friday Night Lights

In February, we completed construction on the 452 MW Texas Solar Nova complex in Kent County, Texas. In October, the site team joined the nearby town of Spur for barbeque and Friday night football during the annual homecoming celebration, where the site team also presented a $50,000 donation to refurbish Spur’s central park.

Supporting First Responders

Safety is a top priority at Clearway, and first responders and emergency medical service teams are key partners in this regard. Across the country, our site teams host local fire and rescue departments for annual drills, and reach out to them with questions, in addition to providing donations to support their work.

In 2024, the crew at our Spanish Fork wind farm in Utah County, Utah, took fire and EMS training to new heights by providing hands-on wind turbine rescue drills for local fire and EMS personnel that allowed them to gain the skills and confidence needed for safe and effective operations. Video recordings from the session will now serve as an invaluable resource for onboarding and training future fire and EMS team members, ensuring preparedness for years to come.

At Clearway, one of the ways we seek to make a meaningful difference at the community level is by giving to those in need. In 2024, our Cedro Hill wind repower project supported the Jim Hogg Community Food Bank in Hebbronville, Texas, with two truck beds of food, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene products, and more. Meanwhile, the team at our Pine Forest storage facility, which is being constructed in Hopkins County, Texas, joined Blattner and Substations Inc., to contribute $3,500 to the Pine Forest Community Church’s Food Bank, which feeds nearly 100 local families in need each week.

Toys for Christmas

In addition, our Mount Storm wind farm sponsored Petersburg’s Hometown Christmas event, which provided more than 350 local children with winter coats, gloves, socks, and toys. The annual event focuses on supporting local residents and is hosted by the Grant County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Petersburg.

Helping Families in Need

In Utah, site teams at our Escalante, Enterprise, Granite Mountain, and Iron Springs solar projects directed a total of $15,000 in donations to three organizations supporting children and families in need in Beaver and Iron Counties. Iron County Care and Share provides assistance to homeless residents of Iron County and neighboring counties as well as to veterans, the elderly, disabled, and other vulnerable community members. Canyon Creek Services and Friends of the Children’s Justice Center both provide counseling, treatment, and support to victims of domestic violence and child abuse. Each organization received $5,000 from Clearway in 2024 to help advance their mission.

Volunteers Are Vital

Many of our Scottsdale, Arizona, office staff engaged in local volunteer activities, which included assisting a food bank with organizing donations and putting together monthly and daily donation boxes as well as bags of pet food donations, sorting 1.5 tons of clothing donated for a career day, and helping a local pet shelter with an evening fundraiser and adoption event.
